Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
Speech-language pathologists and audiologists
are autonomous professionals who have acquired an expertise
in the area of human communication and its disorders. The scope
of practice documents provide a general description of the scope
of practice for the professions of speech-language pathology
and audiology, highlighting the broad range of services provided.
The documents are intended as a resource for audiologists,
speech-language pathologists, health care professionals, regulatory
bodies, government agencies, third party insurers, educators,
consumers and the general public.

The scopes of practice were presented in
draft form in the February 1992 edition of Communiqué.
They were originally prepared by Jean-Pierre Gagné, former
vice-president of professional and educational affairs. The
list of practices in both S-LP and AUD were adapted (in large
part) from: American Speech and Hearing Association (1990).

ASHA, 32, (Supplement No.2), 1-2. First Revisions to the draft
were overseen by Walt Green, former vice-president of professional
and educational affairs; and were presented in the final form
adopted for use by CASLPA. Further revisions were overseen by
Sharon Fotheringham, Manager of Professional Standards and were
passed by the CASLPA Board in May 1998. The 2008 versions, a
separate scope document for each profession, was developed by
a committee with consultation from members, regulatory bodies,
provincial and territorial associations and CASLPA members and
passed by the board of Directors in November 2008.
