Here are some of the events and activities that were undertaken by your colleagues across the country to celebrate May Month 2005

Western Canada

  • Vancouver, British Columbia - BCASLPA has a booth at the Westcoast Family Expo

  • Northwest Territories - Promotional material being sent to health centres, nursing stations and recreation departments throughout region.

  • Calgary, Alberta - May 24 - "Cookies & Careers" presentation about S-LPs and related professions to a group of high school students looking to learn about potential career paths

Central Canada

  • Chatham, Ontario - May 6 - Chatham Kent Health Alliance Radio Public Information Announcement

  • Burlington, Ontario - May 17- Halton and Hamilton Chapters - OAFCCD, "Linking Oral Language and Literacy"

  • Richmond Hill, Ontario - May 18th - Building the Love of Literacy event at the Richmond Hill Public Library.

  • Ottawa, Ontario - May 18-21 - 4th Widex Pediatric Congress of Pediatric Audiology

  • Chatham, Ontario - May 25 - Chatham Kent Health Alliance S-LP Information Booth at the Chatham Kent Library

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - May 25 - Group Health Centre, "The Healthy Voice: an information session on voice health"

  • Pembroke, Ontario - May 27th - Grand Opening of Heritage Hearing Care.

  • Hamilton, Onatrio - June 10th - Open House - Almost made it for..."May is Speech and Hearing Month" at Building Blocks Speech Pathology

  • Chatham, Ontario - Chatham Kent Health Alliance, S-LP department, donation of books to paediatric unit

  • Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario - Group Health Centre, holding awareness activities with patients talking about the professions, handing out May Month posters, bookmarks and pencils

  • Chatham, Ridgetown, Wallaceburge, Blenheim, Ontario - Chatham Kent Health Alliance S-LP Information displays at Chatham-Kent Libraries throughout the month of May

  • Fort Frances, Ontario - Rainy River District School Board Bookmark contest. Prize: win bedtime stories for a year. Theme - "Language Leads to Literacy".

  • Ottawa, Ontario - The Ottawa Hospital staff are taking part in a Hollywood Walk and Talk of Fame movie night with movies, quiz and other fun activities centred on the theme of celebrities with speech, language and hearing disorders. Contact pubs@caslpa.ca if you'd like a copy of this great quiz.

  • Ottawa, Ontario - Speech-language pathologists in the Ottawa District School Board are sending school-age speech and language fact sheets (available from CASLPA) to all the principals in the Ottawa school board, encouraging them to include portions of it in their school newsletters that are distributed to students and parents.
  • Winnipeg, Manitoba - Billboard campaign in ten locations throughout the month of May promoting listening, hearing and speaking.

Eastern Canada

  • Nova Scotia - "Talk and Learn With Kids" (T.A.l.K.) is directed to increasing public awareness of hearing, speech, language development, encourage early referral to community Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology services, and provide a continuing education opportunity for Early Childhood Educators in techniques to faciliate speech, language, and pre-literacy skills during typical children's group activities. The visiting Speech-Language Pathologist provides demonstration activities and Resources (e.g. developmental chart/"fridge poster", tips, featured children's book) to the preschool/daycare centre and for the children to take home to their families.

  • St. John's, NL - Book display in the public library, interview of S-LP by high school students and CASLPA bookmarks in teachers' mailboxes
