CASLPA Project on Speech, Language
and Hearing Services
for First Nations, Métis and Inuit
Speech, Language and Hearing Services for
First Nations, Metis and Inuit Children in Canada with a Focus
on Children 0-6 years of Age
A
serious gap was identified in the availability and delivery
of services in speech, language pathology and audiology services
to First Nations, Metis and Inuit Children in Canada. To take
steps to improve or enhance services to these populations, a
better understanding of current service offerings was necessary.
With funding from Health Canada, CASLPA carried out a project
from December 2010to April 2011 to collect information on speech,
language and hearing services for First Nations, Metis and Inuit
Children.
An Advisory Committee was assembled to lead the project and
included:
Dr. Elizabeth Kay-Raining Bird, Dalhousie University, Chair
Dr. May Bernhardt, University of British Columbia
Isabelle Billard, Audiologist, Quebec
Lori Davis Hill, Speech-Language Pathologist, Ontario
Kendra Dean, Speech-Language Pathologist, Saskatchewan
Melanie Morningstar, Assembly of First Nations (AFN)
Monica Nahwegabow, Speech-Language Pathologist, Ontario
Anna Clair Ryan, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami ( ITK)
Deanne Zeidler, Speech-Language Pathologist, British Columbia
Project Consultants were John Rowlandson and
Margaret O'Hara, British Columbia.
Project Manager, Sharon Fotheringham
The project resulted in three reports:
