President

Gillian
Barnes
Gillian Barnes is the president of CASLPA. She
is a speech-language pathologist at the Movement Disorder
Clinic at Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and has
more than 20 years of experience as an S-LP.
Gillian graduated from the University of New
York, Plattsburgh, with a Master of Arts degree in speech-language
pathology in August 1989. She completed her Bachelor of Arts
degree at the University of Manitoba.
Gillian began her career in Calgary, Alberta,
working with school-aged children. In 1990 she moved back
to Winnipeg and began working at Children's Hospital, Health
Sciences Centre. She worked with preschool children and was
on the provincial Cleft Palate Team. In 1991, Gillian transferred
to the Rehabilitation Hospital, Health Sciences Centre. She
worked primarily with individuals with neurogenic communication
and swallowing disorders. She was on the stroke and head injury
multidisciplinary teams and participated on a number of committees
looking at stroke services. In 2006, the stroke and acquired
brain injury programs were relocated to Riverview Health Centre,
and Gillian moved with the program. In 2007, she became the
speech-language pathologist at the Movement Disorder Clinic,
Deer Lodge Centre. Gillian currently works with individuals
with movement disorders, providing assessment and treatment
of speech and swallowing disorders. She provides in-services
to other professionals as well as to caregiver and support
groups. She is Lee Silverman voice treatment-trained and provides
direct individual treatment and offers a post-treatment maintenance
group (Proud to be Loud).
Gillian is an active volunteer, and during her
career has become very involved with the Manitoba Speech and
Hearing Association (MSHA). She served on the MSHA public
relations committee (1992) and was chair of the convention
committee (1993-1994). Gillian was the president of MSHA from
2005-2007. She currently chairs the discipline committee and
is a member of the ad hoc committee on administrative documents.
Gillian has developed a diverse professional
background in speech-language pathology over the past 20 years,
and she continues to search for avenues to develop further,
both personally and professionally. As president of MSHA,
she gained valuable experience in various governance issues
as well as further developing her leadership skills. She looks
forward to broadening this experience at the national level
and to working with her colleagues from across the country.
Gillian is excited about the opportunity to work with the
staff of CASLPA and to work under the new vision and strategic
plan that the current executive has outlined for the next
three years.
