Joan Chapman, CASLPA Board of Directors
Prince Edward Island Representative

Joan Chapman

Joan Chapman is a speech-language pathologist currently working for the Prince Edward Island Department of Health. She has recently returned to full-time work after enjoying many years of part-time employment while her children were young. She is pleased with the daily opportunities her profession provides to make a difference in the life of a child and enjoys the many children and families she has been privileged to know over the years.

Joan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree (Psychology) from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1987. She received her Master of Science degree (Human Communications Disorders) from Dalhousie University in 1989. She is a clinically certified CASLPA member and Hanen certified in the parent programs It Takes Two to Talk and More Than Words.

Joan has worked in her home province since 1989 with both school-aged and preschool clients. Her current caseload is preschool children with autism spectrum disorder. She is involved with the Preschool Special Needs Team in her area and works collaboratively with a number of allied professionals. She has specialized in providing service to children with autism and their families for many years and has concentrated her professional development in this area of expertise.

Joan has been a member of CASLPA and the Prince Edward Island Speech and Hearing Association (PEISHA) for the past 20 years. She has served as President of PEISHA on two occasions and has participated on a number of PEISHA committees including public relations. She strongly believes in the importance of membership in her provincial and national professional associations. Joan supports CASLPA in all its various roles, and especially recognizes the valuable efforts to promote public awareness of speech-language pathology and audiology and provide national professional standards.
