Chapman
Joan Chapman is a speech-language pathologist
currently working for the Prince Edward Island Department
of Health. She has recently returned to full-time work after
enjoying many years of part-time employment while her children
were young. She is pleased with the daily opportunities her
profession provides to make a difference in the life of a
child and enjoys the many children and families she has been
privileged to know over the years.
Joan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree
(Psychology) from the University of Prince Edward Island in
1987. She received her Master of Science degree (Human Communications
Disorders) from Dalhousie University in 1989. She is a clinically
certified CASLPA member and Hanen certified in the parent
programs It Takes Two to Talk and More Than Words.
Joan has worked in her home province since 1989
with both school-aged and preschool clients. Her current caseload
is preschool children with autism spectrum disorder. She is
involved with the Preschool Special Needs Team in her area
and works collaboratively with a number of allied professionals.
She has specialized in providing service to children with
autism and their families for many years and has concentrated
her professional development in this area of expertise.
Joan has been a member of CASLPA and the Prince
Edward Island Speech and Hearing Association (PEISHA) for
the past 20 years. She has served as President of PEISHA on
two occasions and has participated on a number of PEISHA committees
including public relations. She strongly believes in the importance
of membership in her provincial and national professional
associations. Joan supports CASLPA in all its various roles,
and especially recognizes the valuable efforts to promote
public awareness of speech-language pathology and audiology
and provide national professional standards.
