Manitoba Representative

Leslie Sarchuk, MA, S-LP(C)

Leslie Sarchuk is the CASLPA board director representing Manitoba. She is the director of communication disorders at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Winnipeg.

Leslie received a BA in psychology at the University of Winnipeg in 1978 and then earned a master's degree in speech-language pathology in 1980 at Michigan State University. She completed a certificate course in health care management through Red River College and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in 2005.

Leslie began working at the HSC in 1981. From 1981-1991 she worked in adult rehabilitation and acute care focusing on neurogenic communication disorders and head and neck cancer. In 1991, along with Dr. Mark Barker, Leslie started the Voice Clinic. She continued clinical work in voice and outpatient swallowing until 1999 when she became the director of the department of communication disorders. As director, Leslie is responsible for in- and outpatient audiology and speech-language pathology services for children and adults and continues to participate in the Voice Clinic. She has engaged in research, collaborating with ENT, and most recently co-authored a paper which was published in the Canadian Journal of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She has given numerous lectures and presentations, including presentations at the Manitoba Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA), CASLPA and ASHA conventions.

Leslie has been actively involved with MSHA since 1981. She has participated in and chaired numerous committees including convention, publicity, continuing education, professionals as advocates for the non-speaking, standards and guidelines, and library services. Currently she is chairing the ad hoc committee for administrative documents. She served on the board of directors as vice president of finance from 2005-2007. In January 2008 Leslie received the MSHA Honours of the Association.

Leslie is looking forward to serving on the CASLPA board of directors. She was involved with the convention committees when the national conventions were held in Winnipeg. She recently participated in the CASLPA wait times project. She is very interested in policy development and governance issues. Leslie believes a lot can be learned by being involved with the national body and looks forward to the opportunity to represent Manitoba. The time she has spent volunteering for the professional associations has been a tremendously important part of her career.
