Barbara Burnet, CASLPA Board of Directors
British Columbia Representative
Barbara Burnet
Barbara Burnet has been a member of CASLPA and
BCASLPA since 1980. Most of her experience is in the education
system and her most challenging goal was to ensure enough
service was provided to truly impact and improve student communicative
abilities.
Barbara attended the University of Victoria
and started as a teacher with a standard certificate at 21
in 1972. After two years teaching Grade 1 at Armstrong Elementary
School, she returned to the University of Victoria to complete
her degree. Barbara went back to Armstrong and taught for
two more years. During this time she met an exceptional speech-language
pathologist who worked with her students. She inspired Barbara
to go into speech pathology.
Barbara attended Western Washington University
in the Graduate Program from 1978 to 1980. Her first job as
a speech-language pathologist was in Campbell River School
District from 1980 to 1983. After moving to Vancouver she
worked at the Richmond Health Centre in March 1984. Two years
later an opportunity opened at Shaughnessy Hospital where
she worked from March 1986 to April 1988. Shaughnessy was
a teaching hospital and Barbara started as a clinical supervisor
for the University of British Columbia (UBC). Barbara enjoyed
the experience in the clinic and hospital settings but missed
schools. She returned to the school system and retired from
the Vancouver School Board (VSB) last June after 21 years.
Barbara now works in private practice and is interested in
fluency disorders with clients of all ages.
Barbara's volunteer involvement started as conference
coordinator for the Council of Exceptional Children in 1982
(Campbell River chapter). After moving to the VSB, all time
for committee work was given to the school system, primarily
as the speech pathologists section representative for the
executive of Vancouver Elementary School Teachers Association.
Barbara continued to take UBC speech-language pathology students
while at VSB.
Barbara is lucky to have her family close by.
Her mother lives three blocks from her in a senior facility.
Her sister and brother-in-law also live in the area. Since
retiring in June she enjoys more walks in Stanley Park and
bird watching.
Barbara's involvement with BCASLPA includes
roles as Speech Pathology Committee Chair from 1985 to 1986,
co-editor of Vibrations from 1985 to 1988 and Conference Chair
in 1988. Her CASLPA and BCASLPA membership has helped her
stay current on issues and trends that impact the profession.
