Information for ASHA CCC holders
seeking clinical certification with the Canadian Association
of Speech-Language
Pathologists and Audiologists
How do I apply for CASLPA clinical certification
if I hold my CCCs?
Contact ASHA and have them send CASLPA a letter confirming
your certification currency as a holder of the Certificate of
Clinical Competence (CCC).
Have graduate transcripts and CASLPA clinical hours from your
university forwarded to CASLPA.
ASHA certified S-LPs, complete the CASLPA
MRA application form.
ASHA certified audiologists, complete the CASLPA
clinical certification application for ASHA certified audiologists
form.
Send the application along with the appropriate fee to CASLPA
national office.
Do I need to send official documentation?
Yes, you must contact ASHA and have them send CASLPA a letter
indicating currency of your ASHA certification. You must also
have graduate transcripts and our supervised clinical hours
form completed by your graduate program and forwarded to CASLPA.
If accepted you will then apply for membership and certification.
How do I maintain my CASLPA clinical certification?
You must pay your annual membership fees and collect and report
45 continuing education equivalents (CEEs) every three-year
cycle. Descriptions of acceptable CEEs are outlined on the reporting
sheet located online
but events do not need to be pre-approved. If you do not meet
both of these requirements for maintenance, your CASLPA clinical
certification will be revoked.
Questions from ASHA certified professionals
who wish to become CASLPA certified:
1. I have my CCCs. How do I become CASLPA certified?
You must complete the CASLPA MRA application form (S-LPs only)
and send this and your fee to national office. You must also
contact ASHA and have them forward a letter attesting to the
currency of your ASHA certification to the CASLPA national office.
Finally, you must have your graduate university transcripts
and the signed CASLPA clinical hour form forwarded to CASLPA
national office. The clinical hour form is located at:
http://www.caslpa.ca/english/certification/forms.asp
The MRA application form:
2. Do I have to do a period of supervision for CASLPA like
the ASHA CFY?
No you do not need to be supervised to become CASLPA certified.
You may have to work under supervision for a period when applying
for a full license to practice in some provinces.
3. Will my CASLPA certification assure me of a license to
practice in those provinces that have licensing?
No. As you trained outside Canada, you will need to apply for
a license to practice in the provinces with regulatory bodies,
regardless of your CASLPA certification. Those provinces are
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick
and British Columbia in 2010.
4. What happens in the other provinces and territories that
are not regulated?
Most employers require that professionals hold membership in
the provincial and/or national association in the provinces/territories
without regulatory bodies. CASLPA has a joint membership agreement
with some of the provincial professional associations, so that
if you are a member of CASLPA and work in either British Columbia,
Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Yukon, the
North West Territories or Nunavit, you will also become a member
of the professional association there and pay combined fees.
5. Do I need to be certified to work in Canada?
No, it is not mandatory to be certified to work in Canada.
Many employers prefer this credential by the national association
and in some sites that are accredited by CASLPA, certification
is a part of the standards.
6. I did not achieve all of the clinical hours that CASLPA
requires for certification. What happens in that case?
You would apply for CASLPA membership, and then work under supervision
in the areas of deficit until you had met the requirements.
Your supervisor would need to send CASLPA a letter indicating
that you had completed the hours and then with the other requirements
fulfilled ( transcripts, letter of currency from ASHA), you
would move to certified membership status.
7. Does CASLPA recognize the AuD?
We currently do not have professional doctorate training programs
in Canada. Your training would have to be evaluated to see if
you met our membership requirements.
8. I graduated 25 years ago and my university no longer
has my clinical practicum records. Can I not become CASLPA certified?
You will need to have your transcripts forwarded to CASLPA and
a report from ASHA or your university that you had met the clinical
hour requirements at the time of ASHA certification.
9. Why does CASLPA now require transcripts and clinical
hour forms, whereas in the agreement in 1998, these were not
required?
With an Agreement on Internal Trade signed by all of the provincial
and territorial professional associations and regulatory bodies,
it was agreed that these documents would be required and must
reside with the first authority that makes the person a member.
CASLPA will be happy to send copies of these documents, with
your permission to any of the provincial bodies.
