CASLPA
CLINICAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM
Clinical certification by the
Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists
(CASLPA) is an important step in the career development of speech-language
pathologists and audiologists practicing in Canada. Clinical
certification is not mandatory but is a status and benefit open
to members of the association that many speech-language pathologists,
audiologists, employers and consumers of our services highly
value. Clinically certified members of the association must
be current members in good standing and are committed to meeting
continuing education requirements.
Clinical certification is not a mandatory procedure, but is
required by clinical sites accredited by CASLPA and is requested
by some employers. CASLPA clinical certification is recognized
by ASHA, Speech Pathology Australia, The Royal College of Speech
and Language Therapists, the Irish Association of Speech and
Language Therapists and the New Zealand Speech-Language Therapists'
Association and is a standard that is becoming more recognized
internationally. Clinical certification is not the same thing
as holding a license or registration to practice in a specific
province, which is currently required in seven provinces that
have regulatory bodies (Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick). CASLPA clinical
certification may be recognized as evidence of meeting the academic
and clinical requirements for licensing/registration with the
regulatory bodies.
The clinical certification program has two components: the
clinical certification exam and a
continuing education program. Applicants must be members
of CASLPA and both new graduates and seasoned practitioners
are encouraged to apply to become certified. Membership in the
association and continuing education requirements must be maintained
to retain clinical certification. There is no separate fee for
holding clinical certification.
