What
internationally trained applicants to CASLPA need to know
We would be happy to consider you for membership but as you
received your training outside Canada, it will first be necessary
to have your qualifications assessed to see if they meet current
Canadian standards of a Master's degree or equivalent.
Please be aware that CASLPA is the national professional association
but membership does not give the applicant a license nor assure
employment. CASLPA has joint membership with some of the Canadian
provinces and as such, membership in CASLPA will also mean membership
in some provincial professional associations. Membership in
CASLPA may facilitate your membership in some of the provinces,
but there may be specific additional requirements in some of
the licensed/regulated provinces (currently Quebec, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, New Brunswick, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario).
If you plan to work in a province/territory with a regulatory
body, you should contact them directly before proceeding with
the CASLPA assessment.
The requirement for full membership in the Canadian Association
of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists is a Masters
degree or equivalent in speech-language pathology or audiology.
The coursework must cover the areas described in the document
Assessing
and Certifying Clinical Competency: Foundations of Practice
for Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists.
Course work must also meet the following minimum hour requirements:
270 hours of coursework in normal development and use of speech,
language and hearing; 360 hours of coursework in the major area
(either speech-language pathology or audiology); and 90 hours
of coursework in the minor area (audiology courses for speech-language
pathologists or speech-language pathology courses for audiologists)
in addition to 350 hours of supervised clinical practicum as
described for speech-language pathologists
in S-LP clinical hours and audiologists
in audiology clinical hours.
You must also complete an application for the International
Qualifications Assessment Service along with a release, which
we ask that you sign so that the report on the assessment of
your degree and training can be forwarded to us. Please note
that the BASIC or RUSH evaluation will not be adequate. You
need to request the DESCRIPTION OF COURSEWORK EVALUATION. The
website to obtain this application is:
http://employment.alberta.ca/immigration/4512.html
Please carefully read and complete the IQAS application form
and send copies of the following documents to IQAS along with
a certified cheque or money order of $200 Canadian.
Send a SECOND copy of these documents and $500 to CASLPA for
the cost of CASLPA's assessment:
1. Official degree transcripts,
2. Complete course descriptions including hours of study
3. Verified signed record of clinical practicum hours.
4. Official translations of the documents if not in English
Please note that your application cannot be considered until
ALL DOCUMENTS and FEES have been received. Fees to CASLPA can
be paid by certified cheque, money order or credit card. To
pay by credit card, contact caslpa@caslpa.ca.
You will be notified once we receive the assessment report
from IQAS, which will take approximately 6 weeks, about the
status of your application. If you do meet the academic and
clinical practicum requirements for membership you may then
be required to write our certification examination as a further
step in qualifying for membership and certification.
We would also like to make you aware that many applicants,
who apply holding a medical degree with a specialization in
E.N.T., do not qualify for membership as an audiologist in our
association.
We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your
interest in joining the Canadian Association of Speech Language
Pathologists and Audiologists.
