Continuing Education (CE)

Continuing education is important for continued competency for all professionals, but is mandatory for certified CASLPA members. Continuing education has been a requirement for maintenance of certification since 1995. Certified CASLPA members are required to collect and report a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education equivalents (CEEs) over a three-year cycle. The start of the cycle is determined by the year that the member became certified, that is, the year in which the Certificate of Certification was issued. To become certified, the member must have passed the certification exam, arranged to have university transcripts indicating graduate degree awarded, and verified 350 hours of clinical practicum sent to CASLPA by the end of the year in which the exam was written.

The continuing education requirement starts in the January following issuance of the Certificate of Certification and members are urged to report annually. Certified members are assigned a cycle for the duration of their professional career, no matter if they take a leave or move from one province to another. You cannot carry over activities from one cycle to another and must continue to accumulate continuing education even while on leave. Certified members do have 3 years to reach the minimum of 45 hours, however, so even with the one year maternity leave it is possible to achieve this standard. Forty five hours is also the minimum for part time certified members as you cannot be part time certified.

Certified members will receive a CEE form and an annual report of recorded totals. Those who do not maintain membership or who do not meet the continuing education requirement of 45 hours over three years, will lose their certification and will be required to rewrite the examination to become certified.

There are various categories of activities that can be counted for continuing education and these are described on the continuing education form. Activities, including workshops, do not need to be preapproved by CASLPA. An audit will take place each year, and certified members are required to keep proof of activities one-year post completion of the rotation of the cycle.
